History, culture and wine come together in a landscape that preserves the essence of its past.
The Condado de Huelva is a territory where history is not told: it is traveled. Each village, each road and each vineyard are part of a story that goes back thousands of years and is still alive in the present.
From the Bronze Age, with remains such as the Dolmen de Soto, to the traces of the legendary kingdom of Tartessos in Tejada la Vieja, this land has been a meeting point of civilizations. Romans, Visigoths and Muslims left their legacy here, being especially relevant the city of Niebla, which reached great splendor during the Andalusian period and even today has one of the best preserved walls in Europe.
The configuration of the County as a territory came in the Middle Ages, when in 1369 King Henry II granted these lands to the House of Medina Sidonia, marking the beginning of a common identity that has lasted until today.
But if there is a moment that defines this territory, it is the Discovery ofAmerica. On the banks of the Tinto River, in places like Palos de la Frontera and Moguer, one of the greatest adventures in history took place. From here departed the ships that changed the world, with sailors and families of the area as protagonists of that expedition.
At the same time, the vine began to gain prominence. Since the fourteenth century, the cultivation of vineyards was consolidated in the region, turning the County into a land of wines appreciated inside and outside Spain. In fact, these wines also traveled to the New World, forming part of the first expeditions and trade with America.
Today, this historical legacy coexists with everyday life. In towns like Moguer, linked to the figure of Juan Ramón Jiménez, or Niebla, where the medieval past continues to beat between walls and cobblestone streets, the visitor finds a history that has not stopped, but has evolved without losing its essence.
To travel the Condado de Huelva Wine Route is, in short, to travel back in time: from the origins of civilization to a wine culture that continues to shape the landscape, traditions and identity of an entire territory.
