Palos of the Border

Palos of the Border

Cradle of the Discovery of America, Palos de la Frontera is one of the most emblematic places in Spain to connect universal history, heritage and seafaring spirit. Walking through its streets and historical corners you can relive one of the great epics of humanity: the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World from this small port of Huelva in 1492.

Heritage and places of interest

  • Monastery of Santa María de La Rábida: this Franciscan complex, declared a National Monument, was a refuge, inspiration and support for Christopher Columbus before his voyage, a place where history and spirituality intertwine.
  • Muelle de las Carabelas: living museum next to the Tinto River with life-size replicas of the caravels La Niña, La Pinta and La Santa María, a didactic and evocative experience for the whole family.
  • Church of San Jorge: historical witness of the announcement that made possible the recruitment of the crew for the expedition of 1492.
  • La Fontanilla: Mudejar fountain declared a National Monument where Columbus supplied water to the caravels before leaving – a detail that connects the everyday with the extraordinary.
  • Martín Alonso Pinzón House Museum: Renaissance home of the emblematic captain who sailed with Columbus, with documents and memorabilia of his family, key to the American adventure.

A unique environment to discover

Palos preserves natural riverside areas along the Tinto River and is very close to beaches and places such as Mazagón and Torre del Loro Beach, with a landscape that mixes history, river and ocean.

Culinary tradition

The local cuisine combines products from the estuary and the garden: fish, seafood, strawberries from Huelva and Mediterranean flavors that pair exquisitely with Condado wines.

Trades with living history

Palos’ craftsmanship is inspired by its maritime history – from objects and souvenirs related to sailing to symbolic pieces that recall the great voyage.

A calendar full of life

In addition to local celebrations and cultural events linked to the history of Columbus, Palos takes part in celebrations that evoke its maritime and festive heritage, such as fairs, cultural events and events linked to historical tourism.
